Blog Review Tour: Quintessentially Q (Monsters in the Dark #2) by Pepper Winters

I’m warning you now if you have not read Tears of Tess (book 1) yet, stop.  Go warm up your one-click finger, get yourself a copy and READ IT!
Quintessentially Q is a dark, compelling story that consumed me.  Pepper Winters took me on a heart wrenching, mind blowing, gut twisting journey; that by the end left me feeling spent but soaring high and free.
This, book 2 in the Monsters in the Dark series, picks up where Tears of Tess leaves off.  Just when I thought things were going to fall into place for Tess and Q, my world got flipped.  The traffickers that originally kidnapped Tess return and she is literally ripped away from Q and plunged into the depths of hell.  The atrocities she endured shredded me.  My heart cried out for this woman.  For her life, her soul, her mind and for Q.
My mind is a jumbled mess when it comes to describing Q.  I think the one word I can use to sum him up is power.  Q is full-force, extreme power.  He will stop at nothing and no one to get Tess back.  He welcomes his dark side and engulfs himself in it.   He is terrifyingly powerful in his ferocity.

Je suis pire

When Q finally does rescue Tess her mind is so warped with guilt and disgust that nothing he does or says can penetrate the tower she’s enclosed herself in.  My heart broke to see these two people, so meant for each other, ruined.  Q didn’t give up though.  He was desperate to have his Tess back.  His esclave.  It hurt, physically hurt to watch Tess give up; to see the strong fighter that I knew her to be lock herself up in her own mind because she was weak and couldn’t face the things she was made to do.  It pained me that she couldn’t even put up the fight for Q.  She made promises to him.  He was her everything.  But she couldn’t unlock her mind for him.
Q’s final attempt to release Tess from the hold she had on herself did me in.  If my heart broke before at the ruin their relationship was in, then the rest of me just shattered at what he put himself through to get her back.

Je suis á toi

As painful as this book was to read at times, I never would have missed it for the world.  I loved every single agonizing moment of it.  In the end my heart was left elated to the point that it overrode all the bad.  Everything fell in to place.  Q and Tess needed to go through the excruciating pain they went through to get to the point they are at now.  It was all necessary and pivotal to make them who they are individually and together…stronger.
 Les uns des autres

I applaud Pepper Winters for not holding back with this series.  She takes us into the dark.  It’s ugly, raw, and painstakingly honest.  I cannot wait for the next one.  I’ll gladly follow her wherever she leads.

Review: Return of the Assassin (All The King’s Men #5) by Donya Lynne

Malek and Gina both have had painful pasts when it comes to taking mates.  Malek’s first mate died years ago and he still loves her and can’t let her go.  Gina’s past is filled with abuse and the painful memories that her first mate caused her.   Neither wants to want the other, but their souls have called out to each other as mates do and fighting what is between them may end up being the destruction of them both.

Malek is an enforcer for AKM or All the King’s Men but since he began to mate with Gina and deny it, he is basically a worthless bastard.  He is giving Micah a run in the biggest asshole award currently.  He hates that his body has begun to mate with Gina, he doesn’t want to finally admit that his first mate is gone and has been for hundreds of years.  He is slowly losing his mind to the “suffering” and yet he continues to fight it like the stubborn ass male he is.  I understand his pain and in the previous books Malek was one of my favorites because of how his personality was, but holy shit was he a complete douchebag to begin with in this one.  He needed his eyes opened up and his ass kicked, not only by Gina but everyone else too.

Gina made a huge mistake in the past, she let her emotions overrule her thoughts and she almost did something that she would never be able to forgive herself from.  Since she left Chicago, she hasn’t been the same, having panic attacks and just overall suffering.  She thinks that it is because Malek started to mate with her and that just won’t happen, she won’t ever allow it again.  Her first mate abused her so severely that she wants nothing to do with having a mate ever again, even if that mate was would Malek.  When she return to face Malek she can’t believe what a total ass he is being to her.  When he does the unthinkable to a mate, I loved how she kicked ass.  She needed to kick his ass too.

These two are both broken in their own ways, severely broken.  Both need each other to heal and once they opened their eyes and hearts they not only healed each other but the bond that they have is stronger than I ever thought it would be considering their start.  These two are perfect for each other.

Return of the Assassin is the 5th book in the All The King’s Men series.  I read the previous 4 books in preparation to reading this one and I am officially hooked.  This series reminds me of two of my favorites, The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward and the Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian.  I think fans of both of these series will love the All The King’s Men series as well because these male vampires are hot, sexy and alpha all the way.  I am looking forward to the rest of the books in this series to be released so that I can get more of these sexy vampires.

 Meet Denver
“She’s, at best, a fuck buddy. However, I prefer the term ‘whore.’ Fuck buddy is far too nice a term for her,” a catty voice cracks from behind me.
I take a deep breath and look up at the ceiling, saying a little prayer that maybe the venomous voice isn’t referring to me. I thought I’d left all that behind in Anaconda. We’d been here for all of three days, so it’s highly probable they’re not talking about me, right?  Looking back down, I continue pouring Jack in my Solo cup, surpassing the line that is recommended for liquor.
“Yeah, so apparently, she’s got some serious issues and doesn’t ‘do’ relationships. So, she puts out for her guy friends whose girls are too good to give it up. That’s her idea of a relationship.”
“Really? That’s kinda gross,” I hear the other girl mutter.
Sonofabitch! I groan. Yep, they’re talking about me. I splash a little Coke in my cup and stick my finger in it to stir it around a little. I feel tears spring to my eyes and berate myself for still having feelings and giving a shit what people think about me. Years of dealing with this crap should have made me immune, but I’d really hoped college would be different. And how the hell do they even know about that shit? Strengthening my spine, I turn and give them a beguiling smile, which causes them both to blanch. Yeah, bitches, you’ve no idea who you’re dealing with.
“Ladies,” I say with a quirked eyebrow. Removing my finger from the drink, I place it in my mouth and suck off the excess. With a pop, I release it. “I see my reputation precedes me. Well, let me just reassure you that I’m very good at what I do. When you won’t give it up for your guy, he’ll be looking me up, and I’ll be more than happy to take care of him. No questions. No strings. Just lots of meaningless … hot … sex.” I peer around them with a searching look. “Are they here? Your boyfriends?” I look back at them innocently. I almost snort at their mutual expressions of surprise and disdain. “Or,” I continue, “are the sticks up your asses enough so that you don’t need a man?” Both of their mouths drop on that line. Yep, gets ‘em every time. “Oh, no judgment here,” I vow. “I totally get not wanting to be tied down to any one Dick … or Tom … or Harry.”

Review: Being Amber by Sylvia Ryan

I need to start this review with the statement that I’m not a huge fan of Dystopian Romances. However, Being Amber has changed my mind! OMG! The story that Sylvia Ryan has woven with this one story has made me rethink this. I’m now eagerly looking forward to reading the rest of this series. Unfortunately it’s still in the works! I don’t think she’ll be able to write them fast enough for me.
On to the review…..
A pandemic has wiped out most of the US. The Government has stepped in and created repopulation laws. As a part of that, you’re classified and if needed, sterilized. Talk about having your choices made for you!
Jaci has been classified as an Amber and been sterilized. She’s moved to the Amber Zone and has a whole new way of thinking and living to adjust to. Xander is her roommate. He lives with her and takes care of her.
They fall for each other, but Xander won’t act on those feelings. When Jaci finds out his lies of omission, she’s hurt, scared and she runs.
Xander is definitely hot. He’s alpha-male, dominating and takes control. Jaci is uncertain in her new world. She’s timid at first, which is to be expected. But she develops her spine and stands up for herself. She won’t be stepped on. I loved them both. They’re strong with moments of weakness.
Xander likes to be in control and there are BDSM elements in the story. Jaci is new to this but takes to it like a fish to water. I’m hoping we see more of them in the later stories.
While this is a complete story in itself, there is a small cliffhanger at the end. We have the beginning of a revolution. We know it starts here but we don’t know where it goes or how it ends. However, the story between Jaci and Xander is complete in itself.

I’m ready for the next book in the series and from my understanding there’s more BDSM in it. Plus a set of hot twins! Yummy!

Review: Mine by Katy Evans

It comes at such a disappointment that I couldn’t get into the story like I did with the first book. The story was ok but my biggest issue was that it had too much repetition. I know he has black hair, blue eyes, eight pack, star tattoo, etc. I wanted something more and I never got it. The best part for me was the letter at the end. I loved it.

Hopefully Remy can make up for MY disappointment in Mine.

Review: Menage on 34th Street by Elise Logan and Emily Ryan-Davis

Menage on 34th Street is short and very powerful story.
Kat and Liam have been married for 10 years. Right before they got married their friend, Hunter, left for the Marines. 10 years ago he turned down an offer to be with them. Now he’s back and Liam and Kat want Hunter in their lives.
Liam and Kat obviously have a strong relationship. It’s open and they communicate well. But things come to a head when Kat finds out something Liam kept from her 10 years ago.
Hunter throws a whole new mix into things. Not just because he’s going to be the third in the relationship, but he’s a Marine. A career Marine. It’s everything to him. Being in this unconventional relationship could jeopardize everything.
This story has some amazing smexy scenes. Limits are pushed, boundaries are tested and they get down and dirty. We get all combinations possible in this story with the three of them. There’s not any stone left unturned.
But on top of the hot smexy scenes we have some emotional turmoil. One of the things I really liked about this story was Elise Logan and Emily Ryan-Davis’ ability to put so much into such a short story. Not only did she pack a lot into this story she dealt with the very difficult problems that come when adding a another person into a relationship. It’s not just adjusting to each other when there are three involved, it’s adding in the stigma of a non-traditional relationship. We also have the added stress of Hunter being a Marine. That throws a whole new set of variables to be dealt with.
Elise dealt with these problems very matter of factly in the story. There wasn’t any glossing over of potential problems. While we are left with a happy ending it’s not necessarily a HEA. However, I’m more than happy with the HFN we have.

I’m so intrigued with this trio that I’m really hoping we get another story about Liam, Kat and Hunter.

Review: The Bite Before Xmas by Lynsay Sands and Jeaniene Frost

Let’s split this in the two obligated parts that correspond:

The Gift: 3.0 Stars
Home For the Holidays: 4.9 Stars…(if possible)

Lynsay Sands bought my loyalty when she wrote Lucern Argeneau’s story “Single White Vampire”. For those who DON’T read the RT Book Reviews magazine you may not understand several jokes inside the story, but making a MALE romance novel writer attend the RT Book Lovers Convention is possibly a HUGE task. Inside the convention several things happen and at the end you fall in love with the whole Argeneau clan as much as Lucern falls in love with Kate.

12 books and several short stories later, THE GIFT made me just want to ask for my money back….

I just can’t (no matter how much I tried) imagine a 64 year old man lusting after a 25 yr old (LOOKING) woman. Now, granted shes over 2K yrs old, yes, BUT STILL! Picturing old Teddy Bruwnswick, fall in love IN A DAY! (actually less than 48 HOURS with a woman JUST because she convinces him she’s her life mate, is one of the most twisted and wack stories I have possibly read. Many will disagree, but don’t get me wrong! I love Teddy. He was possibly THE ONLY character that actually SAVED the entire book “The Accidental Vampire” (possibly the worst book in Sands Argeneau series) and made it survive the inevitable drowning as you could actually realize Sands is running out of ideas. But if he has been part of several books and is a well known character by now, don’t you agree with me that he at least deserved a BOOK instead of a story? Look at “The Reluctant Vampire” how come “Drina Argenis” and “Harper Stoyan” deserved an entire book (actually well written) and not Teddy??? Maybe my disappointment rounds the idea of unfairness towards some characters we have learned to love…Bitten by Cupid DID justice to Tiny and Mirabeau…but this one….Im sorry Mrs. Sands, you absolutely disappointed me beyond reason…

Cat and Bones…well, I worship Jeanine Frost’s hands and brain. Its like Cat & Bones live with her and she has seen every single adventure happen before her eyes. I just LOVE books written in first person. So maybe that’s why Cat never disappoints. I just wish it would’ve been longer. Possibly explain a little bit more, but i think that Bite Before Xmas should be enough for all of us her loyal readers…2 books and one story in a year must be EXHAUSTING! 🙂

Blog Tour and Giveaway: Staying On Top by Lyla Payne

Sam Bradford is the #2 tennis player in the world, he has it all, fame, women and money.  Well, he had money, that is until his accountant stole more than 30 million dollars from him.  When his accountant’s daughter shows up wanting to help, its none other than Blair, the girl he wanted to date but she turned him down numerous times.  What Sam doesn’t know is if he can trust her or not, she could be just like her father or is she really just wanting to help?

I absolutely loved Sam.  He was rich, but when everyone else would have completely lost their minds over what happened, he was upset but also knew that there was the possibility that he would never see that money again.  Sam was also real, he had fears like you or me and was more down to earth that I thought he would be.  He wanted to completely trust Blair because of the connection he felt towards her, even though her father was the one who stole from him.

Blair, I had issues with her throughout the entire book.  I just couldn’t get passed her attitude towards everything that surrounded her father and her part in it.  She was a total bitch to Sam at times and others who were helping them.  She dragged him around, lying, and basically playing with his emotions in regards to his money and her.  She does redeem herself a little at the end but for me it just wasn’t enough.  Sam deserved so much more and she deserved to have to work harder at earning Sam’s trust but also his heart.

I will admit, for me this is not one of my favorite books of this series, but it was still pretty good.  I have looked forward to each new book in this series and have had the honor of reviewing them since the first book, Broken At Love was offered for review.  While Staying On Top, for me didn’t rank as high as the rest, it’s the entire series that is a must read in my opinion.  Lyla Payne has written a series about rich college kids and college life and it’s not all sunshine and butterflies, but in the end there is always a HEA even when it’s a rough road getting there.

Lyla Payne Bio:
I’ve long had a love of stories. A few years ago decided to put them down on the page, and even though I have a degree in film and television, novels were the creative outlet where I found a home. I’ve published Young Adult under a different name, but when I got the idea for Broken at Love (my first New Adult title), I couldn’t wait to try something new – and I’m hooked.  In my spare time I watch a ton of tennis (no surprise, there), play a ton of tennis, and dedicate a good portion of brain power to dreaming up the next fictitious bad boy we’d all love to meet in real life.
