In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby’s brand new series, five best friends open a hot new restaurant, but one of them gets much more than she bargained for when a sexy former rock star walks through the doors—and into her heart. Seduction is quickly becoming the hottest new restaurant in Portland, and Addison Wade is proud to claim 1/5 of the credit. She’s determined to make it a success and can’t think of a better way to bring in new customers than live music. But when former rock star Jake Keller swaggers through the doors to apply for the weekend gig, she knows she’s in trouble. Addie instantly recognizes him—his posters were plastered all over her bedroom walls in high school—he’s all bad boy…exactly her type and exactly what she doesn’t need. Jake Keller walked away from the limelight five years ago and yearns to return to what’s always driven him: the music. If he gets to work for a smart-mouthed, funny-as-hell bombshell, all the better. But talking Addie into giving him the job is far easier than persuading her that he wants more than a romp in her bed. Just when she begins to drop her walls, Jake’s past finally catches up with him. Will Addie be torn apart once again or will Jake be able to convince her to drown out her doubts and listen to her heart?

Review: A McKenzie Christmas (McKenzie Brothers #5.5) by Lexi Buchanan

Spend December with each of the McKenzie siblings as they start their own family traditions and try to keep the romance alive with the stress of the season.
Michael and Lily struggle to find a private moment together when the twins and new baby constantly need their attention.

Sebastian is aware of something that Carla should have known well before him.

Ruben and Rosie find the spirit of Christmas on the ice, and move forward with their life in a surprise that Ruben has planned.

Lucien is still haunted by ghosts of his past, but with Sabrina’s help, he’s finally able to move past it.

Ramon and Noah spend the evening of their wedding preparing for their honeymoon. (MM explicit chapter)

And the Epilogue, well, you’ll have to read the novella…

This is a must have for any McKenzie Brothers series fan. I loved revisiting each couple. The whole book is full of warmth, love, and of course tantalizing heat.
Michael and Lily’s family has grown, and as most parents with kids, struggle to find the time to keep the fire alive. They love each other, immensely, but with a set of twins and a newborn, having the energy to devote to your spouse at the end of the day can be exhausting. Thanks to a little grandma intervention, they get that much needed and wanted time together.
Sebastian is usually the goofy one of the McKenzie brothers. He loves life and it’s evident. It’s also killing him to keep his lips shut when he realizes something that Carla really should have suspected. Of course his wife knows he’s concealing something and tries to extract the info from him. Results may not go as she planned, but it’s sure as heck hot to read her attempt it.
Rosie is such a breath of fresh air for Ruben. I think she makes him stop and appreciate life. There’s this innocent quality about her. I can’t help but smile when I read her.
Lucien is struggling with his new life. I swear that man can break my heart. I just want to shield him. He’s completely enamored with his wife and son, but at the same time fears losing it all, and that fear is wearing him down. Sabrina, has to really reach him and show she’s not going anywhere.
Ramon and Noah, oh my! If you’re a fan of M/M, then you are in for a treat. A toe-curling, heart-melting treat. I love seeing those two together, and not just in the bedroom. They are perfect for each other, in every way.
I don’t want to spoil anything, but…the epilogue…Oh, Ms. Buchanan, I do believe you’re giving us a glimpse of things to come and I definitely cannot wait.
A McKenzie Christmas was certainly a special treat and what a way to kick off the holiday season.

Book Tour: Reaper’s Fall By Joanna Wylde

The New York Timesbestselling author of Reaper’s Standis back in her “uber-alpha rough world of MCs”* as one woman’s future is rocked by the man whose hardcore past could destroy her…

He never meant to hurt her.
Levi “Painter” Brooks was nothing before he joined the Reapers motorcycle club. The day he patched in, they became his brothers and his life. All they asked in return was a strong arm and unconditional loyalty—a loyalty that’s tested when he’s caught and sentenced to prison for a crime committed on their behalf.
Melanie Tucker may have had a rough start, but along the way she’s learned to fight for her future. She’s escaped from hell and started a new life, yet every night she dreams of a biker whose touch she can’t forget. It all started out so innocently—just a series of letters to a lonely man in prison. Friendly. Harmless. Safe.
Now Painter Brooks is coming home… and Melanie’s about to learn that there’s no room for innocence in the Reapers MC.

Available at the following retailers:

“You want to watch a movie or something?” she asked, nodding toward the TV. I had a decent one, too. Giant-ass flat-screen—homecoming present from the club.
“Sure,” I said, reaching for the remote. I didn’t have cable, but Ruger had set up some kind of box thingie for me so I could stream shit. “Whatcha in the mood for?”
“Not horror,” she said quickly, and I laughed again, remembering that first evening I’d spent with her at Pic’s house. She’d been so young and scared and vulnerable . . . I’d wanted to eat her up.
I still wanted to eat her.
“I can’t believe that you and Puck were supposed to be watching over me, and then you put in a slasher movie. That’s not how you make a girl feel safe.”
“No horror,” I agreed, although the thought of holding her for a couple hours while she was scared shitless appealed way more than it should. Watch it, asshole. “How about Star Wars?”
“You like Star Wars?”
I shrugged. “Everyone likes Star Wars. You know, I’m pretty damned sure Han Solo was a biker.”
She giggled. “You mean, like a space biker?”
“See, when you say it like that it sounds stupid.”
“I wanted to be Princess Leia. She’s badass,” she said, taking a deep drink of her beer. I watched as her lips wrapped around the neck, her throat swallowing. Oh fuck, that was good. She set the beer down on the coffee table with a clink, then let loose with the biggest burp I’d ever heard.
“Fucking hell,” I said, stunned. “I didn’t think girls could burp like that. Shit. Impressive, Mel. Very impressive.”
She grinned at me.
“We’re friends,” she told me. “And friends don’t need to worry about stuff like that. Let me guess—you’ve never had a female friend before?”
“Not really,” I admitted. “I’m think I’m a little scared.”
Scared and turned on, which was weird.
“You should be. I can do the whole alphabet.”
Damn. I kinda wanted to see that.

Blog Blitz & Giveaway: The Rogue Not Taken (Scandal & Scoundrel #1) by Sarah MacLean

News Flash:  Announcing a sublime – and scandalously wonderful – new series from New York Times, USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author Sarah MacLean!
The author aroused immediate interest when she announced this high-concept affair: “I’m thrilled to announce my next project — the Scandal & Scoundrel series, which I pitched to my editor as ‘Old School TMZ,’” says MacLean.  “It’s modern celebrity gossip with a pre-Victorian twist. Basically, this is my way of convincing my husband that all those glossy magazines in our house are ‘work necessities.’
The first novel in the series, THE ROGUE NOT TAKEN, is a riff on a certain elevator incident made famous at a Met gala several years ago.  But in MacLean’s imagination, the scurrilous turns absolutely sensational, as a ballroom imbroglio sets off a very heated carriage journey along the Great North Road.  It’s a long way from London to Scotland…you would be quite amazed at how much drama can ensue between a seemingly ill-matched duo on such a wild ride!

Lady Sophie’s Society Splash
When Sophie, the least interesting of the Talbot sisters, lands her philandering brother-in-law backside-first in a goldfish pond in front of all society, she becomes the target of very public aristocratic scorn. Her only choice is to flee London, vowing to start a new life far from the aristocracy. Unfortunately, the carriage in which she stows away isn’t saving her from ruin . . . it’s filled with it.

Rogue’s Reign of Ravishment!
Kingscote, “King,” the Marquess of Eversley, has never met a woman he couldn’t charm, resulting in a reputation far worse than the truth, a general sense that he’s more pretty face than proper gentleman, and an irate summons home to the Scottish border. When King discovers stowaway Sophie, however, the journey becomes anything but boring.

War? Or More?
He thinks she’s trying to trick him into marriage. She wouldn’t have him if he were the last man on earth. But carriages bring close quarters, dark secrets, and unbearable temptation, making opposites altogether too attractive . . .

Sophie would want love. She’d want it pure and unfettered, given freely, along with all its trappings. She’d want the marriage and children and happiness and promise that came with it.
King could see it, the life she wanted. The line of little girls, blue-eyed and brown-haired, in love with books and strawberry tarts. For a moment, he imagined them smiling at him the way their mother did, filled with happiness and hope.
For a moment, he let himself believe he might be able to give it to her.
But she would want love, and he would never be able to give it.
He didn’t have it to give anymore. And those children, they would never be his.
He set her down on the edge of the fountain, coming to his knees, as though she was Ariadne and he the Minotaur, worshipping at her feet, adoring her even as he knew she could not survive in the labyrinth, and he could not survive beyond it.
“Tell me about last night,” he said softly, looking up at her, his hands at the hem of her skirts.
“What—” She caught her breath as his fingers explored the skin of her ankles. “What about it?”
“I hated it,” he said. “I hated stopping.”
She pressed her lips into a thin, straight line. “I hated that you stopped.”
His hands were beneath her skirts, pushing them back, farther and farther, up and over her knees. He pressed his lips to the inside of her knee, swirling his tongue there, loving the little gasp of surprised pleasure that came at the touch.
“I hate that I will have to stop today, as well.”

Great North Road Map Reveal: Destinations and author annotations:
Stop #1:  “Sophie Stows Away” (English Country Estate near London)

Author Commentary:
There are moments in life when you know that you just can’t go on without a change. Lady Sophie Talbot, the youngest of the infamous Talbot Sisters (darlings of the gossip rags and nicknamed the Dangerous Daughters) knows this is the case when she lands her odious, philandering brother in law backside-first in a fish pond at a major event of the London Season. And so, Sophie does what’s necessary. “I simply need conveyance home,” she requests of Kingscote, Marquess of Eversley, notorious rake and her only chance of escape. Sophie’s desperate, and in possession of the Marquess’s boot, so she thinks she has a leg up, so to speak. King has other ideas.

Stop #2:  “The Carriage”
Author Commentary:
Lady Sophie Talbot, youngest and least interesting of the scandalous Talbot sisters (think 19th Century Kardashians) isn’t so uninteresting once she’s decided to stow away atop a carriage belonging to the Marquess of Eversley — notorious rogue and her recent nemesis. Indeed, she cannot wait for the horrible man to discover that she’s disguised herself as an outrider and stolen conveyance home to central London. There’s just one problem…
Stop #3: “The Fox and the Falcon Posting Inn”
Author Commentary:
By the time Lady Sophie Talbot finds herself outside the Fox & Falcon Posting Inn, miles from her home in London, she’s realized she’s made a huge mistake. She only ever intended to hitch a ride home to Mayfair–and simultaneously stick it to the arrogant, handsome, horrible Marquess of Eversley, who happens to be minus a boot, thanks to Sophie. Suffice to say, things got out of hand. And now, dressed as a male servant in the drive of a roadside inn, things are about to get much much worse.
Stop #4: “Beware Highwaymen!”
Author Commentary:
Suffice to say, being on the road with an arrogant aristocrat is no fun at all, so Lady Sophie Talbot does what any self-respecting woman would do, she “borrows” his money, and gets herself on the next mail coach north. All seems fine — until Highwaymen arrive, and that arrogant aristocrat arrives just in time to see her entire plan go pear-shaped.
Stop #5: “The Warbling Wren”
Author Commentary:
Being shot on the Great North Road isn’t exactly a thing people expect to happen, and Lady Sophie Talbot finds herself in the rooms above The Warbling Wren pub, under the welcome care of a rather mad doctor and the watchful eye of the rather infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) Kingscote, Marquess of Eversley. There are worse things, she supposes. Or are there? Not for King.
Stop #6: “Mossband”
Author Commentary:
Lady Sophie Talbot, youngest and least interesting of the infamous Talbot sisters, has decided that her best bet to escape London and the aristocratic life for which she’d never been intended is to take herself home — to the small village on the Scottish border where she spent the first ten years of her life. And perhaps, after a disastrous journey north, something would go right, and her childhood friend Robbie, now the village baker, would make good on their silly youthful promises and marry her. Of course, Sophie isn’t alone. She’s saddled with the horrible, handsome Marquess of Eversley. Who has done everything to ruin her plans. Until now.
Stop #7: “Lyne Castle”
Author Commentary:
The Country seat of the Dukes of Lyne, Lyne Castle is the childhood home of Kingscote, Marquess of Eversley, who left home at eighteen after a terrible tragedy and never returned. Summoned home by his ailing father, King finally returns–with the unexpected addition of Lady Sophie Talbot, irritating and somehow irresistible. The estate boasts one of the most complicated labyrinths in Britain…where King and Sophie find solace, and heartbreak, and each other.

“I dare you…to let me touch your wife.”

An audible gasp escapes my kiss-swollen lips and turn to Tucker, awaiting his wrath. He returns Ransom’s intent stare, his expression unreadable. Yet, the younger man doesn’t back down, cocking a challenging brow at Tuck’s silence. He remains unmovable, a master at the art of restraint from his years as a shrink. No doubt he’s had to answer some odd questions, but never any involving his wife.
“I don’t let Heidi do anything. She has her own mind…her own body.”
“So maybe I should be asking her.” A sinister smile on his lips, Ransom angles his focus on me. “Heidi, would you let me touch you?”
My first reaction is to say no—hell no. But Tucker quickly grasps my knee, capturing my attention.
“This is what you want,” he whispers. “He…is what you want. And I can accept that. This is your fantasy, baby. Let me help you make it come true.”
I search his face, waiting for him to break into laughter, but he’s completely serious. My husband is telling me to let another man put his hands on me—his wife. This isn’t right. This isn’t what married people are supposed to do. But even as that rational part of my brain lists all the reasons why I shouldn’t allow this to go any further, my body is already tingling with anticipation. My face and chest are flush. My nipples harden in exhilaration. And my mouth waters with the prospect of tasting Ransom’s skin.
Oh, God. I do want this. And now the decision is mine and mine alone.
“So?” Ransom asks, awaiting our fate.
Say no.
Say no.
Grab Tucker’s hand and get the fuck out of here. Go home and make love to him. Let that kind, good, gentle man be enough.
Once again, Ransom Reed steals the truth from my lips, forcing me to abandon all decency and sanity. Making me take the sanctity of my marriage and soil it with my own slick arousal.
In one single breath, I shatter ten years of devotion, trust and love. And although I know what I’m destroying by lighting this fire, I can’t do much more than stand back and watch it all go up in flames.
“Yes.”

Review: Easy Melody (The Boudreaux Series #3)

Do you ever have that feeling, after a long day, when you finally get to sit and relax and your mind just sighs in content cause it’s good to be home? Or, if you’re a busy mom like me, that moment of peace you get to yourself, either at the start of the day or the end of the night, when everyone in the house is asleep and you can enjoy the quiet, all feels right and you have an inner smile? Yeah? Well, that’s what reading a Kristen Proby book does for me. Her books are that first sip of coffee in the morning and the peace and quiet after my loved ones are in bed. When I settle in to read a Kristen Proby book, I know I’m going to smile, my heart is going to glow, I will feel the warm and fuzzies, because that’s just what her stories do to me. They’re a feel good read with delicious, loving men and strong, equally lovable women. She creates not just single characters, but whole families, and makes you feel like you’re right there with them in the middle of the hijinks, laughter, and above all, love.
Easy Melody is Declan and Callie’s story. Declan, I knew, is a gentle, sweet-talking, easy going guy, and a talented musician playing in bars around New Orleans (think Harry Connick Jr sexy times two). What I didn’t know, and completely loved, was his naughty side. It took me by complete surprise. And oh my God, that man in the bedroom should be illegal, well not really, but wow. Okay, aside from the sexy, I had no idea he was a do-it-yourselfer. He’s in the middle of renovating his home, a plantation-style house in the Garden District. His home improvement skills, and his project at hand, completely appeal to our heroine.

…I flip her over and slap her ass, and with her up in the air, I bury my face in her again…

Callie is back home in New Orleans after her father passes away. She had no intentions of making her return permanent, but when she loses her job in Denver, she stays and tries to breathe new life into her father’s old bar. Being a hands on girl herself, she dives into her own renovation project and makes The Odyssey something truly amazing. And knowing a good thing when she sees it, she asks Declan to make his performances there a regular weekly thing.
Declan has always been straight forward when it comes to women. He’s a love them and leave them type. But Callie’s sharp wit and beauty throw him for a loop. He’s met his match. What happens, however, when you cross a man, who’s never really been in a relationship before, with a woman, who beneath her strength, fears abandonment? You get an amazing story full of growth, healing, and a lot of sexy loving.

“Your love is like a song, and our song is an easy melody that plays, over and over, in my heart. Some days it’s slow and sweet, and other days it’s fast and loud, but it’s always love. It’s my favorite song.”

Easy Melody left my heart full, my soul at ease, and a sweet smile on my face. Until the next cup, Ms. Proby. Thank you.
And keep reading below for an interview with Mr. Delicious himself, Declan Boudreaux.
Callie Mills never intended to return to New Orleans and the life she left behind more than a decade ago. There was no need to open old wounds when she had the life she’d worked hard for in Denver. But when she’s fired from her awesome job in Colorado and her father dies, she has no choice but to return home to run the derelict bar left to her in the heart of the French Quarter. Callie must not only face bad memories but turn The Odyssey into something she can be proud of.
And who better to help bring in crowds of people than Declan Boudreaux?
Declan is a sought-after musician who knows he’s good at what he does and loves doing it. Known to pack the house, he also loves women and doesn’t expect to be knocked back a step by the beautiful new owner of The Odyssey. Callie is sharp, gorgeous and funny, and makes him yearn for something he never has before… Commitment.
But when Callie’s able to turn the business around with renovations, making it one of the hottest bars in the Quarter, will she sell out and leave her past behind once and for all, or will Declan be able to convince her that’s she’s where she needed to be all along…in his arms.
Hey My Secret Romancers, I recently got to visit the Big Easy and spend some time with the very delicious and talented Declan Boudreaux. It was a very quick trip and my first time in New Orleans, so of course I asked to meet him at none other than Café Amelie. And yes, Joe the waiter was every bit as sexy as the ladies have described, but sadly I think he may have been upstaged by the Brussels sprouts. Mmm…sautéed in butter and mixed with bacon and dates, completely drool worthy. Okay, on to the interview. Enjoy!
A deep chuckle knocks the sense into me and I smile sheepishly at my companion.
Me: Um…sorry. I was drooling again, wasn’t I? You don’t know how long I’ve waited to try these. Kristen has made them sound so enticing.
Dec: I’m not a huge Brussels sprout fan, but these are delicious.
Me: Music. It comes so naturally to you. Playing. Writing. Where do you find your inspiration?
Dec: I don’t find it, it seems to find me. And I don’t mean to sound dumb, but I don’t really know where it comes from. No one else in my family is particularly musically inclined, but all I’ve known my whole life is music.
Me: Who were some of your favorite musicians growing up?
Dec: Johnny Cash, Miles Davis, Harry Connick, Jr., Patsy Cline. The list is endless.
Me: Any must listen to artists or songs now?
Dec: I’m fond of Adele, Five Seconds to Mars, and again, the list is endless.
Me: Is there a special piece you’re working on at the moment? Say…for a certain feisty blonde in your life.
Dec: Callie inspires just about everything I do these days.
Me: Okay, one last question. Callie. She’s a pistol and from the start, I think you met your match. How long before you realized that?
Dec: I knew it right away. It was like being shot point-blank. There is no one else like Callie.
Me: Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me. It was a pleasure, Declan.
Dec: Pleasure’s all mine, darlin’.

Review & Giveaway: Untamed by S.C. Stephens

Untamed is one epic journey. S.C. Stephens takes us on a frustrating, painful, complete trainwreck-you-can’t-look-away-from-don’t-want-to-miss-a-beat ride, but for Griffin Hancock it was a necessary voyage. Only then could he pull his head out of his ass and really see the world around him.
Being bassist for an amazingly successful band wasn’t enough for Griffin. He felt entitled to more. He wanted the spotlight. The recognition. He was tired of waiting for his moment to shine. He was going to make it happen. Now.
Sadly, what he failed to see was that he had everything he could ever want or dream of. He was at the top of his career, had an extremely supportive wife, two beautiful and healthy daughters, and friends that accepted him–arrogance and all.
One bad decision after another quickly lead to his downfall. He dug himself so deep, I didn’t know where he’d find the light. But in order to grow and learn, he needed that fall. However, it wasn’t the spiral downward that opened his mind, but the look back up, picking himself up from literally nothing, that was his moment. That’s when he shined.
When I started this book, I thought Griffin was full of himself. I had a full list of profanities to describe him. He had a skewed view of his personal world. He was delusional. His progression made me want to shake him, be done with him…cry for him. In the end, one word now sticks out above the others when I think about Griffin. Humble. He paid a steep price to earn that title and it is well deserved. Not to worry though, he’s still the playful, outlandish Griff people have come to love. He’s just not quite so untamed.

The spotlight doesn’t only shine. Sometimes, it burns.
Being the bad-boy bassist for the world’s hottest band has earned Griffin Hancock some perks: a big house, a fast car, and most importantly his incredible wife, Anna. The one thing it hasn’t brought him is the spotlight. Anna tells him to be patient, that his talent will win out. But Griffin is through waiting for permission to shine.
Without warning, Griffin makes a shocking decision and takes the gamble of a lifetime. Suddenly he’s caught up in a new level of lights, cameras, and chaos—one that pushes his relationship with Anna to its limits. Anna has always found his unpredictable behavior sexy, but lately he’s seen an ache in her eyes, and it has his soul in knots. Just as the recognition Griffin seeks is finally within reach, the thing he loves most in life could be slipping through his fingers…
S.C. Stephens Q&A
1. What was hardest about writing the story from Griffin’s perspective?
The hardest part of writing Griffin’s book was deciding what part of his life to focus on, and what journey to take him on. The possibilities were endless, and sometimes that was really overwhelming. What was the most fun? Griffin’s inner monologue was the best part for me! The things he says are hilarious, but what he doesn’t say is even better.
2. In the book, Griffin takes a chance and tries out a new career. If you could do anything else besides writing, what would it be?
Writing was the dream career for me, so I don’t know of anything I would give this up for. As long as I’m able to keep dreaming up stories, this is what I want to do.
3. Who has influenced you as a writer?
I have learned so much from the writers I admire. Colleen Hoover’s storytelling gift. Tammara Webber’s compelling characters. A.L. Jackson’s descriptive poetry. Christina Lauren’s sexy scenes. Alice Clayton’s and Tara Sivec’s humor. K.A. Linde’s ability to bleed your heart dry. Every book I pick up motivates me to do better.
4. Griffin is always confident with a capital C. What do you think readers can learn from him in UNTAMED?
Sometimes confidence isn’t enough. Sometimes you have to be humble and fallible. Sometimes you have to fail to win.
“What was all that about? And what did you mean at the end there? You are a part of this band, Griffin. You always have been, and you always will be.”
Pushing him back a step, I snapped, “It’s a little late for the pep talk, bro. If you think I’m so valuable, you could have stood up for me in there.” I lifted my arms for emphasis. “It gave me the warm and fuzzies how you let him walk all over me.”
Kellan sighed. “It’s complicated, Griff. Matt’s a genius on guitar…he’s…it’s his instrument, the one he’s born to play. But us saying that isn’t an insult to you. You’re amazing on bass, gifted even. It’s just…we each have our part, you know? And we have to do them the best we can.” He put a hand on my shoulder. “For the sake of the band, I’m asking you to let this go and just…forget about lead. Please?”
I could only stare at him. I felt numb inside. Was this what giving up your dream felt like? For as long as I could remember, I’d wanted all eyes on me—I’d wanted to be the center of attention. Matt had never wanted that. But he was given the instrument that shone while I was given the one that everyone forgot about. My part was designed to blend, designed to go unnoticed. It was everything I wasn’t, and I was sick of being stuck with it. I wanted more, but they wouldn’t give me more.
Without answering him, I turned and walked away, toward the house. What could I say to that anyway? Matt had just permanently rejected my chances at ever being lead guitar. Forgetting was the only thing left that I could do. Forget, or stew, and right now, I wanted to stew.
When I got back to the living room, Jenny and Rachel were there working. “Need something, Griffin?” Jenny asked, her pale eyes practically sparkling with happiness.
Ignoring both her good mood and her question, I called out for Anna. “She’s upstairs with Kiera,” Rachel quietly replied.
Harrumphing some sort of thank-you, I began plodding my way to the stairs. Fucking stairs. I stomped up them, cursing my bandmates with each step. I imagined that the carpet treads under my feet were their squishy faces. I felt a little better by the time I reached the top. “Yo, Anna! Where are you?”
Both Anna and Kiera instantly appeared in a bedroom door frame. Simultaneously, they both put fingers to their lips. “Shhhhhhh,” they both scolded.
I was tired of being reprimanded today, so I didn’t lower my voice any. “Wake up Gibson. We’re leaving.”
Anna instantly edged around Kiera to step into the hallway. “What’s wrong?” she asked me, while Kiera stepped out of the room behind her. The two sisters were pretty similar, but Anna definitely had a lot more curves than her slimmer and straighter sister. Generally I appreciated those curves, but at the moment, I just wanted to shove them into the car and get out of here.
“There’s no point being here right now, so we’re leaving. Actually, there’s no point in ever coming back here, so we’re leaving.” I opened the door closest to me, hoping I’d find my sleeping daughter behind it. Nope. Empty.
I moved to try another door, but Anna stepped in front of me. “Let’s go outside, get some fresh air.”
Dramatically tossing my hands in the air, I gave up. “Fine.” What did it matter, since nothing was working for me today anyway?
I headed back to those goddamn stairs while Anna told Kiera she’d be right back. Not waiting for my very pregnant wife, I sped down the steps and out the door. The fresh air on my face helped calm me down a little, but I was still riled up. I paced the front porch while I waited for Anna. Those sanctimonious assholes.
“Griff?” A soft touch on my shoulder spooked me, and I jumped. Turning, I saw Anna behind me, her green eyes worried. “What’s going on?” She indicated the front step, and I grudgingly sat down.
Once I was seated, my mood dropped. I’d started the day so positively, knowing without a shadow of a doubt that this tour was going to be the one. But not anymore. It was going to be the same old crap. Dropping my head, I slumped over. Anna sat beside me, and her fingers lightly caressed my back in a soothing pattern. It helped my residual anger, but not my rising disappointment.
“One song. I asked for one fucking song…and they wouldn’t even give that to me…” I studied my fingers in my lap while my dreams dissolved in my hands. “Matt just told me that he’s not ever going to give me a chance to play lead, and the rest of the guys agreed with him. I’m done…forever stuck on bass…forever in the shadows. I just wanted one song, one moment in the spotlight.” With a sigh, I looked up at her. “Four minutes? Is that so much?”
Anna’s eyes were heavy with sympathy. Reaching up, she threaded her fingers through my hair. “No…that’s not much at all.”
I nodded and dropped my vision to my lap again. “Yeah, I didn’t think so either. But they can’t even give that to me.” The anger resurfaced, wrapping disappointment around it like a blanket. “Between me and you, babe, sometimes…I really don’t like those guys.”
Anna kissed the back of my neck and wrapped an arm around my shoulder in sympathy. “I’m sorry, Griffin.”
Closing my eyes, I let her comfort wash over me. At least there was one person on earth who gave a shit about me.

“So how long have you been a nurse?”
“I’m going on five years now.”
“I can tell you love doing it,” he expresses. “You’re good with the kids.”
Staring down at my meal, I attempt to hide my emotions. “I guess I was destined to do it,” I lie, fighting back the tears from the true reason why I chose to become a nurse.
“How long have you been a rock star?” I’m quick to ask, wanting to change the subject.
He looks to me as if I’ve lost my mind. “You really don’t know?”
            “Should I?”
With a shake of his head, he gives me a chuckle. “You sure do surprise me, Pixie.”
“Well, excuse me for not being one of your humble servants who knows every detail about you, Mr. Rock Star.” This turns his chuckle into a full-blown bout of laughter.
Bringing his fork up, he uses it to point at me. “I really do like you.”
It’s meant to be a compliment. Oddly, though, I feel as if it’s some sort of acceptance from him.
Trying to further explain myself, I say, “I only know minor details about your band because of Ben. That boy worships you.” I may not be able to see the blush on Kaleb’s cheeks due to the poor lighting, but from his bashful smile, I know it’s there. “But give it time and I’ll most likely know what size underwear you wear soon.”
I had meant it to come out as a joke since Ben would most likely feed me every unwanted detail, but Kaleb has thought otherwise. “So you are trying to get into my pants?”
Appalled, I say, “No! Ben has not stopped feeding me information about you guys since the morning you showed up. If it wasn’t for him, I would have demanded he stop a long time ago.”
            “No other reason?”
Rolling my eyes at his egotistical thoughts, I say, “Nope. I couldn’t care less who you are.”
His hand spreads over his heart. “You wound me.”
“I see you don’t take rejection well,” I tease.
“It’s been a while since I’ve been rejected.”
“The mighty king has fallen from his pedestal,” I mock, earning another chuckle from him.
“You don’t sugarcoat anything, do you, Pixie?”
With a sorrowful shake of my head, I say, “You’re wrong. My career is nothing but sugarcoating reality for these children. It’s what gives them hope. It’s why I do what I do. They deserve to smile,” I state, looking up to the sky to distract myself.
Sadness looms between us for a brief moment. “When’s Ben’s next treatment?”
I’m amazed he’s even asking, but his interest seems sincere. “Tomorrow. He’s almost done, though. But I’m having trouble convincing him to follow through with chemotherapy. He has seen the side effects it can cause with other patients and he doesn’t want anything to do with it,” I disclose.
Kaleb grows silent with a heavy frown before his eyes peer up to gaze at the stars above us. Understanding what he is feeling, I do the same. At the precise moment my eyes seek the sky, a shooting star streaks across the sky. An ache forms in my chest. Kaleb must have seen it as well. His deep voice asks from my side, “Did you make a wish?”
“You don’t honestly believe in them, do you?” I test, wondering what his answer will be.
He grows serious. “It’s one of my fondest memories of my mother. But I stopped making wishes a long time ago because of her.”
I can hear the sorrow in his response and it reminds me of Dani. My chest tightens and my throat constricts as I understand exactly how he is feeling.
“And you?” His eyes intensely peer over to me. “When was the last time you wished upon a star?”
Without hesitating, I reply, “Four thousand three hundred seventy-six days ago. It was the day she died.”
He looks baffled by my answer. “Who?”
“My sister,” I confess in a whisper.
I wasn’t prepared to disclose any information about her tonight, yet with Kaleb, it feels natural to tell him. Nonetheless, the reminder of my loss has the pressure of my threatening tears building. The lump lodged in my throat becomes larger, and my chest grows heavy with grief. Panic that I will break down sets in. “I’ve got to go. Thank you for dinner,” I blurt out as I begin to stand before I risk making a fool of myself in his presence.
He doesn’t stop me, nor does he follow as I make my escape. It leaves me to question why, yet I’m also grateful at the same time. The pain of knowing I’ve lost a piece of my heart is still a fresh wound, regardless of how long it’s been. The fury still courses through my veins and I’d most likely take it out on him, which is unfair. He’s taken enough of my wrath for one night. He’s nowhere close to the true asshole I once resented. The only asshole in this world is cancer and there is nothing that can ever compare to it.
