Review: Number Thirteen by Bella Jewel

**AUTHOR NOTE – This is NOT a BDSM Romance**

We’re thirteen girls, captive, slave to our master.
A master we’ve never seen.
Obedience will become all we know in our shallow existence. It is the only emotion we’re permitted to feel.
When we’re bad, we’re punished. When we’re good, we’re rewarded.
Our scars run deep. Yet we survive, because we have to…
because HE teaches us to.
All of us are special, we feel it with everything we are.
He has us for a reason, but it’s a reason we don’t know.
We’ve never seen his face, but we know that something deeply broken lies beneath the darkness. With every touch, with every punishment, we know it.
Then something changed.
He showed me who he truly is.
Now I want him.
I’ll go against everything I know to be with him.

A monster.

My monster.

Loving him is a sin, but a sinner I am. I won’t stop until I see every part of him. Even the parts he keeps locked deep down inside.

I am Number Thirteen, and this is my story.

My Review:

Normally I would go over each of the characters when I do my review, but for this one I am not going to do that.  I would normally break down what I loved about them or hated, but for this review I am just going to explain the emotions I felt while reading this book.  Let me be very clear.  This is a dark romance, there is no BDSM elements at all in this book.  There is a Master and there are thirteen slaves.  These girls all have dark pasts, some worse and darker than others.  There are rewards for good behavior and punishments for bad behavior.  The punishments aren’t pretty. They are there for a reason.  At times I wanted to hate the Master, especially when he would punish Number Thirteen, or when he wanted to earn her trust but not give his to her.

When the Master finally began to open up, show who he was, you understand better why he is who he is and why he does what he does.  This isn’t about ownership, this is about healing and understanding.  He feels for the girls in his own way, and the girls feel for him, some feel hate others feel relief and one feels love.  There is a feeling of a Stockholm syndrome going on but I don’t think that was truly the case.  I began to feel for everyone involved, especially the Master and Number Thirteen.  At times I cried, others I swore and felt my blood pressure get high, and at the end I felt at peace.

I love Bella Jewel’s books, each one I have read has made me a bigger fan of hers.  Number Thirteen is different from her others.  Like I said before it is dark, but it is beautifully healing at the same time.  I can’t explain it.  There is beauty that comes from pain, beauty that comes from healing, and beauty that comes from trust.  I was drawn in and couldn’t put it down.  I can understand that some people wouldn’t want to read this book, it isn’t pretty, but please give it a chance. If you stopped it, pick it up and start it again.   I am not sure if Ms. Jewel plans on making this a series or writing a follow up because there is enough left open that she could and I hope she does.

Good by S. Walden

I honest to God can’t put into words how much I really and truly loved everything about this story- Everything. I commend the author S. Walden for not only blowing me away with her writing, but finally putting a book out there that gives all other books revolving around the “forbidden love” theme a run for their money.” ~Alyssa
“I don’t go fan girl crazy. Ever. It’s not in my bones to, but imma about to go stage 5 clinger crazy and get into my car and drive up to Georgia to find this author!  How the hell am I suppose to read anything after this???! You’ve ruined me, S. RUINED ME.~Taryn

Try by Ella Frank
Ella wrote a story that ensnared me with the way she portrayed a confident and arrogant bisexual man and a straight man to come together (pun intended) and just Try with one another. If you’ve never read a m/m story, this is a great start to this genre.” ~Amanda

Rowan’s Lady by Suzane Tisdale
This story pulled at my hearstrings and made me feel like I was falling in love again! I laughed, I cried, I sat on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen. We got to see some of our old friends from Clan MacDougall. I loved seeing them again. We also meet some new people that will hopefully be in future stories.” ~Lee Anne

His Ever After by Jessica Ingro
“I could not put this book down. I had been anxiously awaiting its release and let me tell you it did not meet my expectations; it surpassed it. Jessica Ingro nailed it with His Ever After. Encore by Shira Anthony
“This book touched a nerve in me I thought I had hidden in the bottom pit of my soul. Not only it’s supremely written and follows a timeline of 35 years impeccably, but Mrs. Anthony built these characters with such accuracy you will really believe she had witnessed the whole thing.” ~Sophie

Blog Tour and Giveaway: Only For You by Genna Rulon

When a rapist is terrorizing the women of Hensley University, Everleigh “Ev” and her friend Sam attend the self-defense class offered by the university to help protect themselves.  When Everleigh is kicked out by the instructor, Hunter, because of her sarcasm in the first session, she is not only embarrassed but pissed off at the same time.  When Hunter shows up in her classes he is like a bad rash, one that just won’t go away.  The two begin to banter back and forth and eventually a friendship begins.  The problem besides the rapes on campus?  Ev begins to fall in love with Hunter even though he has told her he can only offer friendship right now.  When the attacks continue and get worse, will it bring Ev and Hunter closer or rip them apart?

Everleigh is a smartass of the highest level.  Her comebacks and remarks are so cunning and hilarious at times that you wouldn’t think anyone would be her match.  Ev hasn’t had an easy life, after the death of her mother she has only let a handful of people in, her best friend and roommate Sam being the only one who is the closest to her.  When she decides that her nemesis Hunter needs to be in their group of friends, she quickly turns from hilarious sarcastic bitch to friend.  Her feelings for Hunter continues to grow even though she knows that he has said he doesn’t have time for a relationship with her.  I felt so bad for Ev, when she finally opens up to Hunter, during a time that was extremely emotional for her only for him to throw the I have no time for a relationship excuse in her face yet again.

“We played hot potato with my heart—me throwing it to him, him tossing it back to me. Every time the music stopped, I was always the one holding my bruised organ.”

Hunter, the bastard who dared kick Ev out of his self-defense course, is just as funny as Ev is with his comebacks.  He literally is her equal when it comes to smart ass comments or retorts to snarky remarks to him.  He makes it clear from the start that he only has time for a friendship with Ev, nothing more.  The closer they get it seems like they have a relationship that’s beyond friendship but not quite a real relationship either.  He walks away from Ev when she opens her heart to him and he yet again reminds her about not having time for a relationship right now.

When more attacks happen and a very viscous one occurs, as a woman you can feel the terror that they felt knowing that they could be the next victim.  You feel for each one of the victims as if you knew them personally and when you find out more details than anyone should ever want to know about the attacks and those involved you want to castrate the bastard for attacking the victims.

I loved Everleigh’s character.  She is sarcastic, at times bitchy, but is also a true friend.  She isn’t afraid but at the same time she is.  Hunter is her perfect match.  He takes her sarcastically worded insults and throw his own comebacks without missing a beat.  Watching Ev get frustrated at times was as funny as what she would say to Hunter to begin with.  You watch the relationship that isn’t a relationship grow and you want these two together.  When Hunter once again tells Ev that they can’t have a relationship it is painful because you just know these two are meant for each other.  I will say this, that Hunter is more than what he seems, now take that as you will, it is not necessarily a bad thing, you just have to read it and see for yourself.

When I first started to read Only For You, I will admit I wasn’t sure how I was going to end up liking this book.  If you are looking for a book filled with sex, romance and happily ever after’s for all involved this is not the book for you.  It at times is hilarious but it is also dark due to the rapes of the women.  What this book does include is a friendship that is more than what it seems, secrets, heartbreak, and healing.  When I finished reading it, I realized that I really liked it.  It is a really good book, one that even as typing this has stuck with me days later.  Genna Rulon has written a book that stays with you after you finish, one that shows that not everything is what it seems and those you think you know, you don’t know as well as you think you do.

Review: The Dark Light of Day by T.M. Frazier

Abby’s life started out in hell and hasn’t seemed to get any better as she has grown up.  Her childhood was horrific, her saving grace was her grandmother.  When her grandma dies in an explosion, Abby’s world is once again rocked and this time she doesn’t know what may happen.  She doesn’t trust anyone and why would she?   Those who she should have been able to trust are the ones who have hurt her the most.  When she first meets Jake, their encounter is anything but sweet.  She is drawn to the bad boy, when she has never wanted to want a guy before.

Jake did not want to return to his home town, the reason why he left is not only sad it is something that a person shouldn’t have to go through.  Jake is the ultimate bad boy.  His past has broken his soul and not only are his secrets are deadly but he is also.  When Jake helps out Abby, he didn’t know what all he was getting into with Abby but didn’t care.  He wants her to open up but will he allow himself to open up to her as well?  Can two damaged souls heal each other or will they end up causing even more hurt?

Holy shit!  This is not your happily ever after romance.  It is dark at times and painful. I couldn’t put it down, it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion.  These two are extremely damaged individuals and their souls are broken but the connection that they have is incredible.  They heal each other slowly.  When Jake learns of Abby’s past his reaction is not only scary but beautiful at the same time.  I wouldn’t want to be in Jake’s way, nope not at all.  Abby’s completely ok with Jake’s dark side and even encouraged him to embrace it.

When Abby is dealt yet another horrific blow, I could not wait for Jake’s reaction.  Too bad she never got the chance to tell him because he never gave her the chance.  I so wanted to shoot him with his own gun I was so pissed!  I could not believe him!!  I never thought he would ever pull that shit.  When he works his way back into Abby’s life and learns the truth you could feel the evil in him and I LOVED it.  He may have a dark side but that dark side is what makes him so perfect.  He isn’t afraid to embrace who he is to keep who he loves safe and let me tell you he embraces it big time.

I was hooked from the start, I was drawn into the pain and heartbreak of The Dark Light of Day.  T.M. Frazier has written a book that isn’t your typical romance, it’s dark, gritty, soul wrenching, and it’s also healing, and beautiful.  I am warning you now, you will feel the pain the characters feel, and you will need to process what you have read before moving on because this is one that will stick with you for days after you finished.  I can’t wait to see what T.M. Frazier writes in the future because if it is even as close to as good as The Dark Light of Day then she will have a fan in me for life.
