Excerpt

I’d never given much thought to falling in love. For someone like me, it seemed an impossibility. Why dwell on something that would never happen? I had no interest in chicks for more than what they could give me in one night. Fuck ‘em and then show ‘em the door. There were always clinger groupies, who claimed to love me. But they loved what I could offer them. Sex.A one-night stand.A story to tell their friends about how they slept with a rocker. With Grant McDermott. I was a name. A symbol.Nothing more.

Jerk of My Dreams(& a giveaway!!) #33

Jerk. Asshole. Douchenozzle. Admit it- you hate to love the jerks. That alpha male character who is so arrogant and rude but sexy as hell. That foul mouthed douche bag of a man who rocks your traitorous heart. We’ve all read them and we’ve all liked them to some extent. In real life you wouldn’t touch the man with a ten foot pole. But in the fictional world? Nothing can stand in the way! Everyone would be lying to themselves if they didn’t admit that the meaner the man, the further we run… Towards them! *sigh*

That’s what this weekly meme is about- those jerky delicious men! Each Friday this meme will go up, and you can share your jerk anyway you want: review, interview, lines and quotes, giveaway of a book. However you want! Any time you comment on someones post, leave your link so that person can comment back.

K.A. Linde has stopped by my favorite day of the week on the blog- Jerk Friday! K.A. is a lover of jerks herself, so it’s only fitting she’s here today. Not only has she offered a paperback arc, but a teaser to OFF THE RECORD as well!

Liz Dougherty has no idea a single question is about to change her life.

Her first big reporting assignment for her North Carolina college newspaper has her covering a state senator’s impromptu press conference. Brady Maxwell may have everything it takes to be a politician—a winning pedigree, devastating good looks, a body made to wear suits—but his politics rub Liz the wrong way. When Liz’s hard-hitting question catches the upstart senator off-guard, it impresses Hayden Lane, Liz’s editor who feels she’s headed for a promising career as a reporter.

But Liz is also headed into a secret romance with Brady that could destroy both their ambitions. Though he’s a bachelor, potential voters might frown on Brady cozying up to a reporter. And Liz isn’t sure sneaking around is enough for her—especially when things between her and Hayden might be less platonic than she thought.

Sleek, sexy, and smart, Off the Record ventures into a high-stakes campaign and an even higher-stakes affair to answer the question: When politics and love collide, can there ever be a winner?

OFF THE RECORD Teaser!

“You don’t want to see me?”
He apparently seemed amused at the thought. He knew she wanted to see him.
“I do,” she corrected. She couldn’t lie about that. “But I don’t know why you had to bring me here at seven o’clock in the morning to tell me that. Why didn’t you just come to my place yesterday?” “Because I can’t see you when you want to see me,” Brady told her, pushing his diner coffee away and meeting her eyes. Hers were already narrowed.
“But you can see me when you want to?”
“Yes.” He didn’t even try to hide behind his charming words.
“Why? I don’t get it.”
“I want to see you, but in the position I’m . . . we’re in, it’s not possible,” he told her.
“What, because you’re running for office?” She knew she sounded incredulous, but it made sense. He wouldn’t want to risk anything . . . especially not on a woman, no matter his big talk.
“And you’re a reporter . . . a college reporter,” he reminded her.
“And I wrote that article,” she said filling in the blanks.
“You did,” Brady confirmed. “While I don’t mind you pointing out my faults, the campaign and my opponents will see it as me giving up the nomination.”
“Why are you here then?” she asked, her anger mounting once more.
“Because I still want you. Weeks later, I still want you. And you want me too.”
Liz’s stomach dropped and all the anger she had been holding dissipated. He wanted her. She knew he did, but hearing it like that was intoxicating. She didn’t want to give him up. She was having a fucking hard time even concentrating on anything else.
“So, you want me, but you can’t see me?”
“I can’t see you on your terms,” he corrected.
“What does that even mean?” Liz asked, raising her voice.
“Look, I want us to continue what we’re doing, but in private. I don’t want to jeopardize my career . . . or your career,” he added quickly.
Liz breathed in and out deeply, realizing finally what he was saying. “You want a fuck buddy,” she stated as bluntly as possible. If he was going to be all out in the open, she wanted plain words. She wanted to know what he was offering . . . what kind of deal she was willing to take. He sighed as if she was misinterpreting, but she was sure she wasn’t.
“That’s not what I had in mind,” he said.
“No? That’s what it sounds like. So, what kind of situation is this?” she asked, her anger resurfacing. She didn’t even know where it came from, because it wasn’t as if she didn’t want to sleep with him, and it wasn’t as if she didn’t want to keep it a secret. Some innate trigger in her brain was firing and she was listening.
“Do you get to sleep with other people? Are you going to be dating someone who fits you better in the spotlight? Should I find someone else to date in the meantime?”
“Liz,” he snapped, cutting off whatever she was going to say next. “I’m not here to argue the point. I’m not here to discuss terms. I want you, and I want you anytime I can have you. That happens to be a much more limited time frame. If you aren’t interested, then good luck with your paper.”
He pulled out his wallet, threw two twenties on the table, and stood.

I’m thinking I should’ve read my ARC when I appeared on my kindle last year. After this teaser, looks like I’ll be starting it very soon!

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Following Me by K.A. Linde

Devon didn’t have a game plan when she decided to leave St. Louis on a Chicago-bound train for the summer. Just a reason.
One she couldn’t share with anyone. Not Hadley, her best friend from college, who lets her stay in the guest bedroom; no questions asked. Or Brennan, the bartender at the local restaurant they frequent, who she actively tries to avoid. Or Garrett, Hadley’s boyfriend, who befriends her when she has no one else to turn to.
“I just didn’t know what you were running from…”
Desperate to hide at all costs, Devon plunges into her new life in the city. Everyone around her starts to reveal sides of themselves Devon never expected. And just when she starts to get comfortable, her world flips upside down…
“…But I think all along you were running toward me.”
4 lives.
All connected.
All with secrets that just keep following them.

When I first started writing Following Me, I had a Lana Del Rey song, Dark Paradise, stuck in my head! It embodied everything I thought about the book and I listened to it all the time when I was writing. I wanted something visual that made me think of Dark Paradise, and I found this image with lyrics from the song:

I started a secret Pinterest board that day. I didn’t want anyone to know that I was writing the book yet, so I never made it public. Every single time I found a picture that made me think about the book while I was writing, I added it to the pin board. Sometimes, I would go on the board and look through all of the photos before or during the time that I was writing. It would help me with the look and feel of the characters, setting, and emotions in the book.

And I’ve agreed to make this board public for the first time here on My Secret Romance Book Blog:

Secret FOLLOWING ME Pinterest board

So feel free to take a look and see what inspired me while writing. Get to know the main characters, Devon, Hadley, Garrett, and Brennan, and see parts of Chicago that are included in the book.

Review:

K.A. Linde once again blew me away with this book! …And why am I not surprised? She’s one hell of a kick-ass author and a favorite of mine to this day- The woman is a God at writing some super angsty reads that features some incredibly drool-worthy heroes and this book is major proof of that.
I’m not going to go into much detail by elaborating on this story- The synopsis doesn’t give much away and I think there’s a good reason behind that. The story revolves around the heroine Devon, who made a spur of the moment decision to leave for the summer- She had her own personal reasons for doing so… She just didn’t know if ultimately it was the right decision or not. Unfortunately, I wasn’t a big fan of Devon- I didn’t dislike her… I just didn’t really like her either. At times she came off as a bit too cold and stand-offish for my taste, but then again she had her reasons behind that cool facade and in time I was able to learn and truly understand the reasoning behind her distance. That didn’t mean I always cared for it… But I got it. Desperation can certainly lead to secrets and she was holding a big one that could ultimately destroy her…
Devon eventually learned to take each and every day one step at a time when it came to her new life in the city- But what she wasn’t expecting was complications with her best friend Hadley… Or confiding in Hadley’s boyfriend about her past… And most certainly not falling in love…

…And speaking of love, that brings me to Brennan. *sigh*

My God, I loved that man. He had this mysterious confidence about him that I just couldn’t get enough of… And apparently, either could Devon. Like her, he seemed to have his own secrets that he kept hidden in the depths of his soul. It was obvious he didn’t open up easily to anyone either which is why it was so easy for him to see through the tough shell that Devon tried so hard to hide from everyone else.
The thing I love so much about Kyla’s writing is her ability to make everything seem so real. From the story-line to the character development, it’s all just so believable and realistic which is one hell of a hard thing to come by in romance novels these days. This story was filled with just the right amount of angst and drama to keep you on the edge of your seat, and while I didn’t quite love this book as much as her Avoiding Series, I still expected nothing short of awesome from her when it came to this story… And suffice it to say that I wasn’t disappointed.

EXCERPT:
Sweat beaded on Devon’s temple, and she wiped it off her forehead and out of her eyes. The party had been going all night, and it was nice to loosen up and get lost in the music and dancing. She hadn’t partied in so long, and she couldn’t resist when Amy had actually invited her out. Either she was getting over her hatred for the new girl, or Devon had just been there long enough that she wasn’t considered the new girl any longer.

People were packed into the club shoulder to shoulder, many even closer than that. The music was ear-splittingly loud. Crazy lights traversed the warehouse-sized room, and they alternated to strobes slowing everything down to slow motion. She hadn’t had much to drink, but she was dizzy with dehydration and the energy in the room. Her tank top was sticking to her back, and she had long since pulled her hair up off of her neck into a ponytail.

God, I need another drink, she thought.

Her eyes moved around the room taking in as much as she could from her vantage point. It really only ended up being the two feet encircling her. Amy had to be somewhere inside the building. How had she lost track of her?

Well, she knew how. There were too many damn people in the place. It was easy to lose track of one person, especially when that person was as short as Amy. Still, she should have done better. She didn’t like being alone in dark places. Whether she was surrounded by people or in a back alleyway at night, she was still alone.

She craned her head to look for her, but was having no luck. It felt like more and more people were being crushed into the space. How was this in line with fire code? Surely the place would be shut down soon.

Walking in the direction of the bar, Devon tried to find Amy in the crowd. Seriously it was getting harder and harder to maneuver through. She was literally having to elbow people out of the way. This wasn’t okay, and it wasn’t fun. They shouldn’t let any more people in. Things could get out of control.

Devon looked up over the heads of people in front of her and sighed. It felt like she was never going to reach the bar, and there was a huge line anyway. She thought maybe the bathroom would be a better alternative…at least there she would have some privacy.

She turned to walk the other direction and slammed right into a meaty guy in front of her, who glared at her as she lost her balance and tumbled to the floor. Someone stepped on her hand as she tried to get up. Devon swore and hissed pulling her hand away from the ground where someone else could do the same thing. She stood as best she could, cradling her aching hand. It wasn’t easy pushing through people with one hand pressed between her breasts to keep from someone else smashing into it. All it did was cause people to unknowingly smash into other parts of her. She hadn’t made it more than a few feet toward the bathroom, and she had already been elbowed in the arm, gotten her foot stepped on, and been drunkenly body slammed knocking the breath out of her. The club was getting dangerous. A space opened in the crowd, and she took advantage, rushing forward through the throng of people. It took her closer to the bathroom but not close enough. Then she felt it. Eyes on the back of her head. She didn’t even know how it was possible. There were hundreds of people in the place. No one could be focusing that intently on her, but she could swear that someone was watching her.

Let’s pretend this wall is my kindle…

I have never been so irritated (yet in love?) while reading a book!

One minute I wanted to punch my kindle and cut someone, the next I was all like…

Lexi contradicts herself
Ramsey is hiding shit
Jack…is being Jack! ❤
Loads of sexual tension
Bekah is a whore
Chyna rocks!
A new guy
And I still loved it…
Lord.
Help.
Me.

Team Jack baby!

Avoiding Commitment is the first book in this series, and a tough act to follow. No joke. I loved it so much that I can honestly say it’s one of my top favorite books. What the author did it me was…is..too hard to explain. All I know is that it’s exactly what I look for in a book.

This book starts out with a bang! It picks up right where the first one left off. I couldn’t put it down and when I did it was all I could think about. This book took over my life for the few days I was reading it and after I finished it too. K.A. Linde definitely has a way with words that grips you right from the start.

Lexi once again finds herself torn between two men. Jack, her first love and who is always ever presently on her mind. No matter what she does she can’t seem to escape her past with him. And to be honest, I don’t want her to forget it. I love the sexual tension and heat between them. I love the memories they shared. I love how all Jack has to do is look at Lexi with those penetrating blue eyes and she succumbs to his every need. I love how it’s a now forbidden romance between them yet they can’t fight the attraction…but they do. I just love them together!

Then there is Ramsey- Someone who unexpectedly works his way into Lexi’s heart. He has the same sexual tension with Lexi as Jack does, but Ramsey is different and works to prove himself to her in this book. I was worried that Lexi wouldn’t notice since she is so consumed with thoughts of Jack. The thoughts never stop until Ramsey comes into the picture and he makes her forget all the deceit and broken promises Jack made to her. But Ramsey will never be able to erase the past though…

The intensity between Lexi and Ramsey is powerful, but Lexi cautious with her emotions when it comes to trusting Ramsey after everything that’s happened. He is very secretive and won’t open to her which drove me bat shit crazy! Lexi is on guard 24/7 and has reason to be- what Ramsey is hiding is more than she ever thought.

Ramsey is no Saint! Wake up ladies! Read between the LINES!

One issue I had with this book was that I found it to be extremely repetitious, to the point where I was skimming. It made me want to cry over all the long winded thoughts Lexi had during conversations. They were drawn out and tedious, sometimes going on for pages. None of this was needed! Just about each chapter was filled with the same consuming thoughts of Jack. It’s one thing to relive memories and events that happened, but it’s another thing entirely to relive each one in nearly every chapter again and again. I already know it all.

What saved this book for me was the last 10% of the story. IT.WAS.AMAZING. I was reading as fast as I possibly could. I could not put it down yet nearly too much to handle! The end of the book leaves us hanging a bit…now I am dying to find out what happens! Oh, but Jack, what I wanted to do to you at the end for not speaking up…

All in all, I would still recommend this book. K.A. Linde is still my new favorite author of mine. Despite my issues, she still had me glued to each page and on the edge of my seat with wanting more. K.A. Linde was able to capture the love and fervor with this story as much as she did with Avoiding Commitment.

The perfect song for this book- Wide Awake by Katy Perry.

Blog Tour: Avoiding Responsibility by K.A. Linde

Taryn:  Hey Jack and welcome to My Secret Romance! I am so grateful that Kyla is allowing me to interview you. I’m a Team Jack fan through and through. *sigh*

Alright- I have some friends here with us today. Amanda, Janna, Nic and Denise. Nic and Denise are from the Flirty & Dirty blog and they actually just finished interviewing Ramsey in the next room, so they decided to pop over to sit in with us. Denise promises to be on her best behavior- they all do. *sweet innocent smiles coming from the girls*

Taryn: Now Jack…

Amanda: What the FUCK were you thinking giving Bekah a ring!  Lexi’s ring! And I don’t care if it’s a fake one!

Janna: I hope it hurt like hell when Lexi racked you in the balls!

Taryn: *mumbles to self… Oh shit…* Sorry about that, Jack. Care to explain that dreadful situation?

Nic:  Jack, I love ya and am routing for ya, but when are you going to MAN UP and grow a set?!?!

Jack:  Wow!  What a warm welcome from this crew.  *smirks*  Good to see you ladies too.  Um…I think I explained this already.  It wasn’t exactly smart.

Okay. Not smart at all.

But Bekah stumbled across my grandmother’s ring and flipped out.  I was already considering proposing to her, and there was no way that I could explain to her why I was giving her a different ring than the one she found.  And…I just couldn’t give her the original.  It doesn’t make sense, but in some twisted way, it makes sense to me.

Amanda: Did you even consider Lexi when you gave Bekah that ring? Or what she might be going through? That was a dick move of you.

Taryn: It was pretty dirty. My mouth dropped open when I read it…

Nic: We know you love Lexi, so it boggles the mind that you would hurt her so bad.  Lexi would never do that to you!

Jack:  Lexi would never do that to me?  Well, I couldn’t see her proposing to anyone, so that’s probably true.  But Lexi has done her fair share of misleading.  Anyway, it’s not about that.  It’s about whether or not I considered Lexi when I proposed to Bekah.

I did.  *shrugs*  I thought she was playing me.  I thought she had been dating Ramsey this whole time, and that she wasn’t being honest with me.  I didn’t realize it until later…much later how wrong I had been.  But I had already hurt her.

Taryn: Jack, if you were to come with a warning label, what would it say?

Janna: *coughs* Douche bag

Amanda: Asshat

Nic:   Add water to grow a set!!!!!!

Amanda: Warning label…Caution: dick might just break in you do to over usage.

Janna: Oh! That’s a good one, Amanda! *high fives Amanda*

Taryn: Watch it girls! You’re talking about my Jack here. I don’t bash peppermint bitch Ramsey like this!

Nic: I got your back Taryn. Are you all forgetting that Ramsey was in cahoots with Bekah in the beginning?!?!  ASSHAT!

Taryn: What would I do without you, Nic?

Denise: If the shoe fits…

Taryn: Oh. My. God. Such hostility!

Jack:  Not even sure where to begin.  Was there a question in there?  Oh, right, warning label.  Uh…caution:  gets hot when angry?  I dunno…best I got.

Janna: If you couldn’t be in Lexi’s life, who would you rather her with: Ramsey or John? I say Ramsey is best for her…

Nic: Jack, man up!  You are the only man who should be in Lexi’s life and you know it. You can’t deny that you are kindred souls….

Jack:  Is that a trick question?  I don’t have to answer that do I?  Can I say neither?

Taryn: Jack, something has been driving me insane. Please, please tell me why you didn’t speak up right before the wedding was to take place when everyone was in the room letting all hell break loose? What was going through your mind? I was internally pleading, begging, you to speak up, and you sat there stone faced.

Janna: That’s what drove you insane…not the cheating? *cops an attitude*

Denise: *whispers to Janna* You know these Jack Packers are in denial. They’ll see anything but the truth of this asshat’s ways

Taryn: Shut it, Janna! And Denise, let’s not forget all the LIES Ramsey likes to tell. Talk about denial!

Nic:  Do you really want to stay with Bitch-face Bekah for the rest of your life?!?!  You know she will take your manhood!

Jack:  Uh…I guess I’ll start at the beginning with Taryn’s question.  Why didn’t I speak up?  Sometimes I kick myself for it, but I did say that I didn’t sleep with those other women.  Then Lexi and Chyna just went off about it.  I just figured that no one was going to believe me anyway.  I had dug myself so deep into a hole that I wasn’t going to get out of.  Definitely not the afternoon before my wedding.  They weren’t going to believe me so why even try to have them see reason?

And, uh, Nic, I don’t really want to talk about Bekah.  I’ve been with her for nearly three years and I’m pretty sure she hasn’t taken my manhood.

Janna: Now that you’re getting married, do you think you can stay faithful to Bekah? Why stay faithful to her and not Lexi?

Denise: Cuz Bekah has the leash so tight he’d choke… Pussy

Nic: Yes, faithful to Bekah, right…. I see concrete walls in Jack and Lexi’s future!

Taryn: Yes, please!

Jack:  You really can’t even compare them.  Lexi and I had a long, strange history and what happened in New York, well, it was a mistake, but we weren’t together.  I don’t know how to describe it.  It probably doesn’t make sense to most people unless they’ve been through what Lex and I have been though.

But marriage…that’s a whole different story.  My parent’s divorce really wrecked me when I was younger, and I’d never want that to happen to me or my kids, if I have any…

Amanda: What was your first impression upon meeting Lexi? Describe her to us.

Jack:  Confusion?  Or maybe that was just the first time I saw Lexi.  I was working and her friend came up to me and invited me to a concert.  I would have just ignored her; she was kind of eccentric.  Can’t believe someone married her.  That’s neither here nor now.  Anyway, she pointed Lexi out to me in the coffee shop, said she had a crush on me, and that if I thought she was hot I should stop by.  I never did that sort of thing, but then I looked up, and she had her nose buried in her book trying not to look at her friend talking to me.  And…I don’t know, something in me just clicked.  I took the paper and went to the concert…because I just had to.

It’s been like that ever since.

Taryn: Lexi is no saint, she’s definitely made some wrong turns, but do you feel you’ve treated her wrong? If the situation was reversed how do you think you’d react to everything that’s happened between you both?

Jack:  Honestly Taryn?  I never thought that I treated Lex wrong.  When you’re in it…really in it, like I was with Lex, then you don’t see anything that’s going on outside.  There was only the two of us.  We made the decisions that were right for us when we were in that situation.  I doubt I would have acted any different than Lexi, and I don’t think she would have acted any different than me.

Taryn: If you could make it up to Lexi and right all the wrongs, would you? How would you do it?

 Nic:  Yes Jack, how?!?! ~swoons~

Jack:  *stares at ground* Look, I can’t change the past.  The wrongs will still be there no matter what happens, and I can’t change that.  All I can do is move forward.

If she needs me to make something up to her though…I can think of a couple ways… *winks*

Janna: You don’t deserve Lexi, in my opinion, but if you could have a future with her, would you? Can you honestly say that you love her? Or is it purely a physical thing for you?

Jack:  Well, we’re all glad to hear your opinion.

To say that I don’t love Lexi…or that I never loved Lexi is quite honestly that most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.  We were so in love that everything else around us was like a blur in comparison.  Yes, I love her body and physically we had something incredible.  I mean…you read the wall scene that Taryn raves about. *smirks* But to say that it was nothing more than that is insulting.

Taryn: Last one, if you and Lexi had a song, what would it be?

Jack:  Man, I associate so many songs with her over the years, but I think I always go back to Free Fallin’, the John Mayer version.

Taryn: Thank you so much for being here Jack. I really appreciate it.

Denise: I’m out.

Janna: I need wine after this…

Amanda: Off to buy some books with real men in them…

Nic:  I still believe in you!  Just know, if you can’t be with Lexi or Bekah you can make a fresh start with me! *ducks because Taryn is throwing things at my head*
